Mobile weather systems for Marines

EDGEWOOD, Md., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has ordered more mobile weather information systems from Smiths Detection for the U.S. Marine Corps.

The systems -- the Meteorological Mobile Facility (Replacement) Next Generation -- are mounted on a truck and use a mesoscale meteorological model to compile data from a variety of sources. The system rapidly provides "a complete picture" of current and future weather patterns, thd company said.

"This sole source award further emphasizes Smiths Detection's commitment to providing leading technology to the military and offers the Marine Corps an expeditionary, operationally relevant, affordable system," said Lance Roncalli, Smiths Detection vice president of Sales of Americas and U.S. managing director.

Smiths Detection said the contract for the METMF(R) NEXGEN systems is worth $7.8 million. Delivery is expected to begin next July.
