GAINESVILLE, Fla., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contracted Altavian Inc. for continued unmanned aerial vehicle deployment to support projects in Florida and Puerto Rico.

The value of the five-year contract from the USACE Jacksonville District for Altavian's NOVA Block III UAV wasn't disclosed.

Altavian, a company specializing in professional-grade unmanned aircraft for data collection, said it is the first unmanned aircraft systems company to be awarded a federal contract in support of civilian data deliverables using unmanned aircraft technology.

The NOVA Block III is a small, custom-built AUV for gathering precision geospatial data for engineering and natural resource management applications, including inspection of levees, and monitoring of waterways and wetlands.

"We are using all of the leading technology -- the latest sensors, unmanned aircraft design, and data processing techniques -- to deliver a state-of-the-art product," said John Perry, Altavian's chief executive officer. "In doing so, we've created a solution that delivers a range of services for our clients' diverse needs."
