Being sought is an open systems solution for surface ships to counter small unmanned aerial vehicles and small boat threats.
Industry had been briefed in May about the ONR's overall Solid-State Laser Technology Maturation program, which builds upon ONR's directed-energy developments in kilowatt-scale lasers.
Among the concepts being developed and tested is a laser that disabled a small boat target last year in a system demonstration. Earlier this month, the Naval Sea Systems Command, ONR and Navy Air and Missile Defense Command sponsored a series of laser weapon concept development tests aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer.
The Office of Naval Research said industry bids for development of the prototype solid-state laser being sought was contained broad agency announcement.
"We're looking for an open systems solution to this warfighting capability because we believe it's cost effective and can provide the best value to the government," said Peter Morrison, ONR program officer.
