KOBLENZ, Germany, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The first two Tornado fighters of the German air force to undergo upgrading have been returned to service.
Germany's Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement said the planes – has returned to operations after several months of conversion, certification and acceptance at the Bundeswehr Technical and Airworthiness Center for Aircraft and at a Cassidian facility.
Modernization to ASSTA 3.0 level included integration of state-of-the-art subsystems. Among them: new radar warning equipment; network-compatible data communications; a modern VHF/UHF radio set; a digital video and data recorder; and Laser Joint Direct Attack Munitions, which can be directed to the target by means of satellite navigation as well as by laser.
The government agency said another 83 aircraft will be modified to the ASSTA 3.0 standard.
