Raytheon enhancing dual band radar

TEWKSBURY, Mass., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Raytheon's dual-band radar, destined for a future U.S. Navy carrier, is to undergo software enhancement.

The enhancement ordered by the Navy for the radar's use on the future USS Gerald R. Ford will "optimize power efficiency" of the multi-mission air defense radar system.

Enhancement, as well as system preparation for testing, comes under two contracts worth a total of $53.6 million.

"DBR is the first U.S. naval radar system capable of simultaneous, coordinated operation across two frequency ranges," said Raytheon's Kevin Peppe, vice president of Integrated Defense Systems' Seapower Capability Systems.

"Leveraging proven technologies and our radar expertise that spans 70 years, DBR will be the U.S. Navy's most capable radar and a critical asset for the fleet."

DBR combines X-band AN/SPY-3 Multi-Function Radar and S-band Volume Search Radar. Operating together, a broad range of missions can be conducted simultaneously, including self-defense/anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, land attack, naval gunfire support, surface search, navigation and air traffic control.

Raytheon said the system is the result of collaboration between it, Lockheed Martin and the Navy and that it is in production for the Ford class aircraft carrier.
