BALTIMORE, July 26 (UPI) -- The first AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar system being developed for the U.S. Marine Corps by Northrop Grumman has been delivered for testing.
The G/ATOR system, with multiple sensors, is designed to detect and track a threat such as manned aircraft, cruise missiles and unmanned autonomous systems. It features an open, scalable architecture for digital interoperability and allows capability enhancements through software-only updates.
Northrop said the G/ATOR system has completed the first part of the System Performance Qualification Testing and performance verification testing by the company at the system and subsystem levels.
"Throughout these tests, G/ATOR has demonstrated an unprecedented ability to provide enhanced information and surveillance data to the warfighter," said Steve McCoy, vice president for tactical sensor solutions at Northrop Grumman.
"With G/ATOR's modular, scalable architecture, we can get that capability into the field sooner and at a lower cost to the Department of Defense.
The system has been delivered to Surface Combat Systems Center at Wallops Island, Va., for first and second phases of developmental testing by the government.
