LONDON, July 19 (UPI) -- The radar electronic support measures system used on Type 45 destroyers of the British navy will soon be available commercially.
Thales UK and Ploughshare Innovations Ltd., the technology transfer company of the country's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, have signed an agreement to continue development of the RESM and to supply it to other navies.
"Thales is excited to be working with Ploughshare to develop a world-class technology," said Phil Naybour, head of Thales UK's naval business. "This (RESM) is now in-service with the Royal Navy and is providing them with an unrivalled capability, even in the most demanding of theaters.
"With this exclusive license, Thales is looking forward to the launch of a new export product later this year."
The product is a direct radio frequency sampling and wideband digital receiver technology developed as part of a Dstl's research program. It provides greater accuracy, improved sensitivity and the ability to operate in high-density signal environments.
With the system, many expensive microwave components can be eliminated, thus reducing through-life costs.
