Second-generation Aegis on target

WASHINGTON, June 27 (UPI) -- The second-generation Aegis ballistic missile defense system intercepted a target missile in flight, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said.

The test this week took place over the Pacific and was conducted by the MDA and the U.S. Navy cruiser firing the service's new Standard Missile-3 Block 1B.

"Today's test event was the second consecutive successful intercept test of the SM-3 Block IB missile and the second-generation Aegis BMD 4.0.1 weapon system … (and) is a critical accomplishment for the second phase of the President's (Barak Obama's)) European Phased Adaptive Approach consisting of the SM-3 Block 1B interceptor employed in an Aegis Ashore system in Romania in 2015," a news release stated.

"Initial indications are that all components performed as designed resulting in a very accurate intercept."

In the test, the USS Lake Erie, equipped with the second-generation Aegis BMD 4.0.1 weapon system, detected and tracked the target missile and launched the SM-3 Block IB missile.

Trajectory information was sent to the SM-3 Block IB missile, which diverted its path and destroyed the target missile in a hit-to-kill intercept.
