STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., June 15 (UPI) -- General Dynamics reports it has submitted a proposal for the contract to build more than 1,000 vehicles for use by U.S. Special Operations forces.

The bid for the U.S. Special Operations Command Ground Mobility Vehicle program was delivered to the command's headquarters by General Dynamics Land Systems in May, the company said. A sample vehicle built for the program had been delivered earlier.

The GMV 1.1 vehicle, with enhanced operator and occupant protection, is a high-performance vehicle and can be carried by rotary or fixed wing aircraft.

Its design is modular, allowing fast configuration for specific missions and environments.

"General Dynamics Land Systems performed extensive testing over a two-year period to validate the vehicle's design and performance," the company said. "The vehicle passed user trials at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona and the Nevada Automotive Test Center, and demonstrated its systems reliability during summer trials in the United Arab Emirates."

The contract for production of as many as 1,300 vehicles is expected to be awarded in January of next year.
