HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 11 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin is vying to produce target missiles for element and system flight testing for the U.S. ballistic missile defense program.

The company submitted a bid Friday to the Targets and Countermeasures Directorate of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense Agency. MDA expects to issue the contract for target missiles this year.

"Target missiles are important to our nation's missile defense mission," said John W. Holly, vice president of Missile Defense Systems for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. "Our targets provide threat-relevant scenarios to the system under test, creating tough and stressing engagements.

"Our team's proposal for Medium-range Ballistic Missile Targets delivers the reliability, threat relevance and cost effectiveness needed to best support the mission. Lockheed Martin is applying our unmatched mission success record and demonstrated cost efficiencies to the nation's current and future needs for next-generation targets."

In its request for proposals, MDA stipulated that bids include integrated logistics support, pre- and post-mission analysis, launch preparation and execution and engineering services.

Lockheed said its team for the project would include Cummings Aerospace, Davidson Technologies Inc., IERUS Technologies Inc. and Orbital Sciences Corp.
