UBERLINGEN, Germany, June 5 (UPI) -- Germany's Diehl Defense says it has received an order from France to refine 76mm naval ammunition.

The new ammunition will feature insensitive explosives, meaning it protects against detonation if the vessel carrying it catches fire or is hit by enemy shelling.

France plans to deploy the ammunition for Oto Melara Super Rapid-L62 naval guns, which will be used on new FREMM frigates.

Diehl Defense produces the normal explosive 76mm ammunition and has produced about 300,000 of the rounds for the naval forces of Germany, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Canada, Ecuador, Columbia, Qatar, the Netherlands, Turkey and others.

Diehl said the new ammunition is a joint venture product, which it will make with Nexter Munitions of France.

France's Junghans T2M will supply the shells' fuses, which propellant charges will be supplied by Nitrochemie Wimmis of Switzerland.

The value of the contract wasn't disclosed. Neither was a definite delivery schedule but Diehl noted the guns for which France wants the ammunition will be deployed on the FREMM frigates from 2015.
