Army orders upgraded Falcon IIIs

MELBOURNE, Fla., June 4 (UPI) -- The Harris Corp. is providing upgraded Falcon III AN/PRC-117G tactical radios to the U.S. Army that improve and broaden battlefield communications.

The multi-band, manpack radio units -- worth a total of $26.7 million -- are is the only full-production radio certified by the National Security Agency for Type-1 implementation of Soldier Radio Waveform SRW on the battlefield, a voice and data standard used to extend battlefield IP networks.

"This order will accelerate and broaden the deployment of SRW, which is a key component in the Department of Defense's transition to a networked battlefield,'' said George Helm, president, Department of Defense business, Harris RF Communications.

"Harris is leading the way in porting, testing, certifying and deploying SRW systems, both in the AN/PRC-117G manpack and, shortly, the AN/PRC-152A wideband handheld radio.''

The AN/PRC-117G enables applications such as streaming video, simultaneous voice and data feeds, collaborative chat, and connectivity to secure networks.

The order for the radio units and accessories was received via the U.S. General Services Administration. No delivery details were provided.
