Babcock working on comms buoy

LONDON, May 30 (UPI) -- A contract for the initial development phase of Britain's Submarine Communications Buoy Technology Demonstrator Program has been given to Babcock and Wilcox.

The SCB is a towed communications buoy for VLF radio messages, which will operate while the submarine is submerged.

Babcock said it will work on the project with Systems Engineering and Assessment Ltd. The team is one of two to receive the Ministry of Defense contract.

"We are delighted to have been awarded this Phase One contract and continue our involvement in this program," Babcock Future Business Technical lead Tim Whitten said. "Our team has a strong combination of TDP experience, technical know-how and complementary skills to meet the challenges of this project."

Babcock had previously been involved in the project, conducting concept design and assessment, analysis, model testing and platform integration studies.

Under the new 14-month simulation and testing contract, Babcock and its partner will develop and validate an effective SCB system design.

A Ministry of Defense contract will be awarded later for delivery of a full prototype system and demonstration.
