LINKOPING, Sweden, May 29 (UPI) -- Swedish defense and security company Saab reports that it is modernizing the country's military and civilian weather radar network.

Work on modernization comes under an award from with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration.

The contract, Saab said, is for six years and carries a potential value of more than $13.9 million if all options (for three additional years) are exercised.

Under the award, all 12 of the country's weather stations will be upgraded to a Dual Polarized Doppler system for enhanced weather forecasting.

"We are updating the Swedish weather radar network with the latest technology, thereby guaranteeing the system's performance for many years to come," said Lars-Erik Wige, head of the Support and Services business area at Saab. "We are proud to have won this deal, and this confirms our unique expertise within the field of radar technology, both civil and military."
