"This exciting new product raises baggage screening to a new level," said Smiths Detection President Mal Maginnis. "It is designed specifically to meet the unique challenges faced by airlines and airports every day.

"It offers an unparalleled combination of size capability and throughput rate with the efficient space footprint and long-term value that operators need."

Smiths Detection said the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT's size allows for screening of larger items through automated inline handling systems and that it can scan 1,800 bags per hour at a belt speed of about 1.6 feet per second.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT was unveiled at an Investor Day event in London.
