SYDNEY, May 23 (UPI) -- Thales Australia has been tapped by ITT Exelis of the United States to supply minesweeping equipment for use on new South Korean navy vessels.
The three sets of Advanced Acoustic Generators for ITT Exelis will in turn be given to GMB US, the prime contractor for South Korea's new Mine Sweeper Hunter program.
"The ROKN has committed to having the most advanced minesweeping technology, which is also in service with the Royal Australian Navy, the United States Navy, and two other navies," said Jean Pellegrin, Thales country director for South Korea.
"As new mine-related threats emerge, it is vitally important to deploy cutting-edge systems that deliver innovative and flexible capabilities to friendly naval forces on operations."
Thales said the Advanced Acoustic Generators is a water driven, turbine-powered system that can be integrated with any minesweeping system.
"This technology is the result of close cooperation with Australia's Defense Science and Technology Organization, as well as a long-term investment to develop innovative, specialized solutions at our facility in Sydney, Australia," said Chris Jenkins, Thales Australia's chief executive officer. "We believe the AAG is well suited to the export market, and this contract reflects growing international interest in our minesweeping systems."
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
