MOORESTOWN, N.J., May 22 (UPI) -- Computer program development and testing for Australia's Aegis-equipped destroyers has been completed by Lockheed Martin.

The first Hobart class Air Warfare Destroyer is still under construction for the Royal Australian Navy and Lockheed conducted the testing at a U.S. Navy facility in New Jersey.

"The Aegis Weapon System enables navies around the world to protect their citizens and their nations from continuously evolving threats," said Doug Wilhelm, director of international Aegis programs for Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors business. "We look forward to working with the U.S and allied navies to continue to provide proven anti-air warfare capability on a global scale."

Aegis is a system for shooting down ballistic missiles. The system is currently used by the navies of Japan, Norway, the Republic of Korea and Spain as well as the United States and others.

Australia is planning on three of the new destroyers, which will be capable of simultaneous anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine and naval gunfire support operations.
