The components -- pod structural housings -- will be for carrying Northrop Grumman's Airborne Laser Mine Detection System externally on MH-60 helicopters operated by Japan's maritime forces.
The ALMDS uses pulsed laser light and streak tube receivers housed in the pods for wide-area reconnaissance and assessment of surface and near-surface anti-ship mines in coastal waters.
CPI Aerostructures said the ALMDS structural assemblies will be produced under a $1 million contract it received from Northrop Grumman, with delivery of the units beginning in mid-2013. Deliveries will be completed in early 2014.
Ten assemblies were produced earlier by CPI under a separate contract supporting the system's low-rate production by Northrop as part of mine countermeasure systems capabilities of new U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ships.
The ALMDS doesn't feature towed mine detecting equipment, which would slow operations during the deployment and recovery process. Instead, the system's design uses the forward motion of the aircraft to generate image data.
