MOORESTOWN, N.J., May 17 (UPI) -- The newest upgrade to the Aegis defense system has demonstrated its capability for integrated, simultaneous engagement of multiple air and missile targets.

"It's an exciting time to be part of Aegis' evolution," said Jim Sheridan, director of Aegis Baseline 9 programs for Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems and Sensors business. "This test is the culmination of two years of hard work by our Lockheed Martin engineers and marks the start of a new era where the Navy no longer has to choose between air or missile defense capabilities for any given mission."

Lockheed Martin said the demonstration was conducted at a land-based U.S. Navy facility in New Jersey.

In addition to testing the Baseline 9 upgrade, the demonstration also involved the use of a multi-mission signal processor to counter the electronic jamming systems of attacking aircraft.

The scalable MMSP combines next-generation Aegis ballistic missile defense and anti-air warfare capabilities in an open system architecture.
