KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 16 (UPI) -- Senior executives at BAE Systems are to visit East Malaysia to expand cooperative ventures with local companies.

Areas to be visited by the trade mission are the regions of Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan.

BAE already has a regional business hub in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

"BAE Systems recognizes Malaysia's ambitions to access sustainable technologies and capabilities, which will help to build a vibrant high-technology industrial base with access to global markets," said John Brosnan, BAE Systems managing director of Southeast Asia. "BAE Systems already has a long history working with Malaysian industry; we will continue to build on existing relationships and forge new ones."

The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Composites Technology Research Malaysia, Malaysian Industry Group High Technology and Masterplan Consulting. It is also sponsoring scholarships for Malaysian students to study in the United Kingdom.

It recently expanded its joint venture with Boustead Heavy Industry Corp., BHIC Bofors Asia SdnBhd, which has an industrial facility in Kota Kinabalu, to manufacture gun systems for the Royal Malaysian Navy and the region's militaries.
