Missile warning system in full production

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., May 15 (UPI) -- A new infrared missile warning system by Northrop Grumman has entered full-rate production following authorization from the U.S. Air Force.

The NexGen missile warning system -- for use on C-17, EC-130J, HC/MC-130J and other aircraft -- has been or is scheduled to be installed on several hundred aircraft, including helicopters, Northrop Grumman said.

"The full rate production approval of the NexGen missile warning system, a spiral upgrade to the current Ultraviolet missile warning system, will enable the fielding of this capability to our Mobility Air Force airlift and Special Operations fleets and significantly increase their ability to counter the MANPAD threat," said U.S. Air Force Col. Shawn Shanley, the Air Force LAIRCM Program's senior material leader.

The NexGen MWS has a longer detection range for infrared missile threats and greater reliability.

Northrop Grumman designed and developed the NexGen system.
