SCHAUMBURG, Ill., May 1 (UPI) -- ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems has given $13.9 million in subcontracts to its U.S. parent companies for supply of passive and active sonobuoys.
A sonobuoy is a small, expendable sonar system dropped from aircraft or ships for detection, classification and localization of adversary submarines.
ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems, a joint venture of Sparton Corp. and USSI, a subsidiary of Ultra Electronic Holdings, said the sonobuoys are for an unidentified international customer.
"ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems is pleased to have been selected to assist our international customer efforts in protecting its borders by providing the leading-edge products developed by our joint venture partners," the company said.
"We welcome opportunities to play a role in the defense activities of our foreign allies and the expansion of the number of contracts we've received from foreign nations demonstrates ERAPSCO's deliberate progress into markets outside the U.S."
The subcontracts are worth a total of $13.9 million.
Production of the sonobuoys is expected to be completed by January of next year.
