MCLEAN, Va., March 30 (UPI) -- The safety of South Korean nuclear power facilities will be supported by a U.S. company that will perform hydraulic and structural analysis of eight plants.
Alion Science and Technology, which has headquarters in Virginia, said the work for Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power will involve replacement sump strainers, cooling system components, which filter debris from water used to cool the reactor.
Alion, as a subcontractor to Transco Products Inc. of the United States, will test and analyze the strainers for hydraulic and structural performance. Alion will deliver a qualification report that documents the strainer performance parameters and design basis.
"Sump strainers must adequately strain debris from cooling water and be able to withstand the loads from operation and seismic events," said Chris Amos, Alion senior vice president and manager of the Technology Solutions Group.
"Alion's engineers will assure that they will perform as intended if a design-basis accident occurs.
"This project builds upon Alion's deep experience with nuclear power plant safety and further expands our presence in global markets."
The value of the two contracts -- one for hydraulic work and one for structural analysis -- weren't disclosed.
