LINKOPING, Sweden, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Swedish company Applied Composites AB has been selected to develop a prototype stealth radome for the South Korea's KFX aircraft program.

The radar dome, in the nose of the aircraft, is designed to protect radar antenna from wind and weather.

The contract to ACAB was issued by LIG Nex1, a South Korean company developing weapon systems, radar and surveillance systems.

"We are very proud of, and pleased with, the contract from LIG Nex1 since it consolidates our position as world leader in radomes" said ACAB President Torgny Stenholm.

"In addition, the agreement is considered to be strategically important for ACAB as the company has plans to expand within the commercial and military aerospace segments."

ACAB is a Volvo Aero company and a supplier of advanced composite components for military applications and has supplied radomes for Saab fighters, including the Gripen.

The value of the contract and its terms weren't disclosed but ACAB said it includes production of prototypes.

The KFX is intended to replace South Korea's F-4 Phantom II and F-5 Tiger II aircraft.
