IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army is displaying hybrid electric vehicles by Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide at the Chicago Auto Show.
The display by the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center will highlight how the Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle, with diesel hybrid-electric powertrain, saves money.
"Quantum's high-efficiency powertrain technologies help to save fuel, while enhancing vehicle performance and versatility," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, president and chief executive officer of Quantum.
"Our new generation powertrains are ideal to support tactical operations in both urban and un-urban environments across the broad range of U.S. military operations and terrain profiles, for direct action, reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare and counter-terrorism."
CERVs use 25 percent less fuel than conventional vehicles of comparative size. They are designed for reconnaissance, targeting and rescue missions, have a top speed of 80 miles per hour and a silent-run capability of 8 miles.
Quantum said the vehicles features its Q-Force all-all-wheel drive, diesel hybrid-electric technology, a light-weight chassis, and ability to climb 60 percent grades. CERV has been certified for internal transportation in aircraft.
The Chicago Auto Show runs through Feb. 19.
