WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A U.S. manufacturer of amphibious vehicles has introduced two high-speed trucks for military, public safety and commercial operations.

The Phibian, by Michigan's Gibbs Amphibians, is made of carbon fiber and features an off-road capability and a speed of more than 30 mph when in the water and can transition from operating modes in less than 10 seconds, the company said.

It can be used for search and rescue as well as transport of cargo and personnel.

The Humdinga is a smaller amphibian, specifically designed handle more rugged ground conditions.

"Phibian and Humdinga deliver a revolutionary and highly effective solution to the growing demands placed on today's transport, first responder and military communities," said Gibbs' Chairman Neil Jenkins.

"Natural disasters in recent memory, such as the earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and elsewhere in Asia, ,as well as the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans illustrate the need for amphibians as capable, versatile and efficient as Phibian and Humdinga."

Jenkins said the Phibian base model can be configured to meet customer needs.
