ANNISTON, Ala., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- BAE Systems has won a $31 million deal to refurbish U.S. military M113A2 armored personnel for Iraq under the Foreign Military Sales program.
The refurbishment of 440 APCs will be performed in conjunction with the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama and will be completed by April.
"The M113 refurbishment will give the Iraqi army a capability which is relevant to a variety of threat environments," said Joe McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Combat Vehicles at BAE Systems. "We have been exporting and doing upgrade work on M113s for decades."
BAE Systems said refurbishment work includes replacing damaged equipment and components and servicing the vehicles to full operational capability.
Once work is completed, the vehicles will be shipped to Iraq.
BAE Systems, under an earlier arrangement, provided refurbishment material for 548 Iraq-bound APCs and is providing field support and training in their operation to Iraqi forces.
