LISLE, Ill., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Navistar Defense and two other companies are working together to develop a new combat vehicle for U.S. Special Operations Command.
Navistar's partners in the endeavor are Indigen Armor of South Carolina and Virginia's Science Applications International Corp.
Special Operations Command requirements for its upcoming Ground Mobility Vehicle 1.1 program calls for a highly mobile, mission-ready vehicle that can be carried by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. About 200 vehicles would be produced annually for five years.
The vehicles would be fitted out with a full array of communications, surveillance and other electronics systems supplied by the government.
"We are eager to team with Indigen Armor and SAIC to provide U.S. Special Operations forces with an off-road truck that possesses unprecedented mobility and is designed to be an affordable solution throughout its lifecycle," said Navistar Defense President Archie Massicotte. "Navistar brings world-class truck and engine integration capabilities to the table and with our partners we will be able to provide quick-to-market products to support the needs of Special Operators."
A request for proposal for the program is expected this month.
