HAIFA, Israel, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Israel's Elbit Systems Ltd. reports it has developed a hyperspectral sensing payload for its Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 drones.

The hyperspectral imaging technology enables simultaneous imaging of the region of interest at different wavelengths, with the spectral signature of the imaged materials.

Elbit said the result is intelligence gathering via identification, measurement and tracking of materials and objects including uncovering low-signature military activity and invisible obstacles.

The system has a ground segment that enables automatic interpretation of the images and data captured.

In addition to its military use, hyperspectral sensing technology could be used for detecting pollution and locating mineral deposits as well as projecting crop yields.

Elbit's Hermes 450 is a long-endurance medium-sized unmanned aerial system for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. It has a maximum speed of 120mph and a service ceiling of 18,000 feet.

The Hermes 900 flies at 30,000 feet.
