WAYNE, N.J., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Britain's Ministry of Defense has contracted U.S. company Data Link Solutions for Link 16 sustainment and engineering services.
The contract is for five years and is worth $29 million.
Link 16 is a tactical data exchange system used by the United States and NATO countries for sharing tactical information in real time. The information -- by and for ships, aircraft and ground forces -- is resistant to jamming with the system and is encrypted.
Under the award, a DLS support facility at Waddington Air Base in England will provide support for installation and integration of LINK 16 component terminals for the Ministry of Defense's Tactical Data Links Delivery Team.
Establishment of the facility improves sustainment, maintenance, repair and replacement unit availability for the Ministry of Defense.
"With the opening of this facility, the U.K. (Ministry of Defense) will realize significantly reduced repair turnaround times resulting in operational and maintenance savings, while eliminating the burden of transporting terminals back to the United States," said DLS Director Mike Beltrani.
"The Waddington Support Facility will serve as a model for in-country support for customers in more than 30 countries that use our Link 16 terminals and systems today."
DLS is a joint venture of BAE Systems and Rockwell Collins.
