BERN, Switzerland, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Armasuisse, the Swiss defense procurement agency, said it has contracted Gotthard Schnyder AG to dismantle obsolete armored personnel carriers.
In all, about 330 M-113 grenadier vehicles will be torn apart and their components recycled and sold, with revenue going to the Swiss government.
The M-113 armored personnel carrier, which Switzerland obtained in several variants, are about 45 years old, out of service and stockpiled at various sites around the country.
An initial batch of the vehicles was dismantled in 2006.
Armasuisse said about 30 of the armored personnel carriers will be transported by rail each month to Gotthard Schnyder AG, a metal recycling company in the city of Emmen.
Mothballing of the M-113s and their recycling is the result of the Swiss military's Armee 95 and Armee XXI reforms, under which obsolete weapon systems are withdrawn from service and either sold or destroyed.
Armasuisse was appointed by the government's Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sports to oversee the effort.
