MONTREAL, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted Canada's Ultra Electronics TCS for communications gear to facilitate the transition of its tactical networks to IP-based networks.
Under the $23 million deal, Ultra will provide the Army with shelter upgrade kits and additional AN/GRC-245 radios for the Army's Warfighter Information Network-Tactical program.
Ultra said the gear is to upgrade the AN/TRC-190 sheltered line-of-sight radio communications system now deployed for compatibility with Internet Protocol-based networks.
"The Ultra AN/GRC-245 tactical radio truly is the backbone of the U.S. Army's WIN-T Inc-1 deployed communications network and has been used extensively in both Iraq and Afghanistan," said Iwan Jemczyk, president of Ultra Electronics TCS. "These latest orders further demonstrate Ultra TCS's excellent track record in delivering high-quality, reliable and relevant tactical communications equipment to the U.S. Army."
Ultra's AN/GRC-245 radio is capable of up to 34 Mbps data throughput and allows multi-band operation.
Deliveries of the new shelter kits and radios are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Ultra Electronics TCS specializes in tactical communication systems and electronic warfare systems.
