STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Land Systems reports it will continue upgrading M1A1 Abrams Tanks for the U.S. Army.

GD had already been modernizing the Army's Abrams that had been in service for more than 20 years under a 2008, multiyear contract issued by the service's TACOM Lifecycle Management Command.

Under the $60 million order now being announced, General Dynamics will continue upgrading those tanks as well as M1A1 Abrams currently in use to the M1A2 Systems Enhancement Package V2 configuration, which includes thermal sights for day and night use, enhanced crew digital displays and a remote operated weapons station.

The Abrams in the main battle tank of the U.S. Army and is powered by a gas turbine engine.

Modernization work is expected to be completed by June of next year, the company said, and would be performed at company facilities in Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, General Dynamics said.
