Rolls-Royce picked for reactor upgrades

LONDON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- France's state-owned nuclear power giant is having new safety instrumentation, control, technologies and systems by Rolls-Royce installed on 20 reactors.

Areva said the instrumentation and systems to be provided by Britain's Rolls-Royce under a $325 million contract are part of a third round modernization program that involves 20 nuclear reactors managed by Electricite de France.

Each reaction is has a capacity of 1,300 megawatts.

"We are proud of our relationship with Areva and our long partnership with EDF, which spans over 40 years," said Benoit Chabre, Rolls-Royce president of Instrumentation and Control.

"We are pleased that they have once again put their trust in our world-class I&C technologies, which help to ensure the safety and performance of their reactors."

Rolls-Royce said its Spinline technology is the basis for the instrumentation and control technology it is providing, including its digital Reactor Protection System and its Nuclear Instrumentation System.
