U.S. Navy awards submarine contracts

GROTON, Conn., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- General Dynamics announced Monday the receipt of two awards from the U.S. Navy for submarine repair and modernization, as well as technology development.

Under the first award, General Dynamics Electric Boat will continue to operate its New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn., where repair and modernization services for submarines are conducted.

The contract carries a value of $41.6 million.

The second award is a contract modification worth $15.1 million. General Dynamics said it is for advanced submarine research and development studies in areas such as manufacturability, maintainability, hydrodynamics and acoustics.

Other areas for research are manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling, safety and manning.

General Dynamics said the contract modification supports technology insertion in the near-term for Virginia class submarines and the identification of technology replacement options for Ohio class submarines. Concepts and technologies for future submarines would also be identified.

The Navy awarded the original five-year contract -- with a potential value of $711.4 million if all options were exercised -- last year.
