LYTTELTON, South Africa, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A new integrated long-range mortar system by Denel Land Systems has entered service with the South African military.
The Level 5 system from Denel includes the 60mm long-range mortars, mortar fire control computers, mortar rounds and an observation post with laser range finder.
Denel said development of the system was based on a handheld personal digital assistant with built-in Global Positioning System.
The system uses a laser range finder with a built-in compass to fulfill target-acquisition and fire-adjustment tasks. The bearing accuracy is based on the magnetic compass and magnetic declination is automatically taken into account.
The advantages of the new system are: a light weapon; large area coverage; faster into-action times; situational awareness; safety boundaries; ballistic calculations; coordinated illumination; pre-calculated targets; line bombardment; point bombardment; high shot hit probability; and logistical requests and navigation, Denel said.
Denel, which has headquarters in Centurion, South Africa, said its business is primarily focused on meeting the requirements of the South African military.
