WASHINGTON, June 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department has announced that the Missile Defense Agency has contracted L-3 Communications to support an airborne sensors project.

The award to L-3 Communications Integrated Systems, LP, Platform Integration Division in Waco, Texas, is worth about $537.9 million.

It is an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity delivery order consisting of cost-plus-award-fee, cost-plus-incentive-fee, and cost-plus-fixed-fee for line items for the Airborne Sensors Program.

It has a five-year base period of performance and five, one-year options.

Under this contract, L-3 Communications will provide mission support and operations and sustainment for the High Altitude Observatory I, II and III and the Wide-body Airborne Sensor Platform.

The Defense Department said the work by L-3 will be performed in Tulsa, Okla. The performance period is from last week through June 21, 2021 if all options are exercised.

Fiscal 2011 research, development, test and evaluation funds in the amount of $12,109,000 will be obligated to incrementally fund the first two task orders. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the fiscal year, the DOD said.
