ST. LOUIS, June 23 (UPI) -- Boeing has contracted LaBarge Inc. of Missouri to produce wiring harnesses for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Standard Missile-3 System.
LaBarge didn't disclose the monetary value of the contract.
Production on the contract has begun at LaBarge's Joplin, Mo., operation.
The SM-3 is part of the sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System for the Missile Defense Agency and will be deployed on Aegis cruisers and destroyers to provide allied forces and the United States protection against short- to medium-range ballistic missile threats in the midcourse phase of flight.
The LaBarge-built cables are part of the SM-3 Kinetic Warhead.
On Feb. 20, 2008, during a real-world mission, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the U.S. Navy destroyed a non-functioning satellite with the Aegis SM-3 launched from the USS Lake Erie.
Raytheon is the prime integrator of the SM-3. Boeing is a subcontractor to Raytheon.
LaBarge, Inc. is a broad-based provider of electronics to technology-driven companies in diverse markets.
