COLOGNE, Germany, May 9 (UPI) -- The European Aviation Safety Agency has given a type certificate for the turboprop engine that powers the Airbus A400M transport aircraft.

The certificate designates the TP400-D6 engine from Europrop International GmbH as having met civil standards after intensive series of safety, endurance and performance tests.

"Certifying the TP400 has presented a unique series of firsts due to the leading-edge technology that is incorporated in the design of the engine," said EASA Executive Director Patrick Goudou. "Today's achievement is the result of the strong cooperation and high degree of dedication of the teams from EPI, its parent companies … and EASA."

Europrop International GmbH was created by four leading European aero-engine companies -- Industria de Turbo Propulsores, MTU Aero Engines, Rolls-Royce and Snecma -- to manage the TP400 engine program.

The engine, designed to power the Airbus Military A400M military transport, features a three-shaft configuration and will deliver a maximum power output of 11,000 shaft horsepower.
