ATK receives rocket propellant order

MINNEAPOLIS, April 28 (UPI) -- Minnesota's ATK Energetic Systems has received an $80 million order from General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products for MK90 propellant grain.

The Hydra 70 rocket system is used on a variety of fixed- and rotary-wing platforms, including the AH-64 Apache, the UH-60 Black Hawk and the A-10 and has been used extensively in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We are pleased to have this opportunity to continue our long-standing tradition of production excellence on the MK90 propellant grain," said Kent Holiday, ATK Energetic Systems vice president and general manager. "We have made this propellant grain, or its predecessor design, for many years and look forward to continuing to meet the needs of our customer and the ultimate end-user -- the warfighter, with an affordable and reliable product."

ATK said it manufactures the MK90 propellant grain using a unique rolling method and extrusion process which assures a safe, low-cost and dependable propulsion solution.

The grain incorporates a minimum smoke, double-base, low-signature formulation.

Additional details of the contract weren't disclosed.
