NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin was given a 2011 Edison Best New Product Award for its MONAX 3G wireless communications system during ceremonies in New York.

MONAX is a powerful, new communications system that combines the convenience of smartphone technology with the power and flexibility of a secure, highly portable infrastructure to give U.S. warfighters a convenient and immediate communication capability.

The product garnered Bronze Award in the Applied Technology category.

"Lockheed Martin is known for innovation in the defense and aerospace industry but to be honored among the world's best inventors and innovators is truly special," said Macy Summers, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions-Defense vice president of Advanced Development and Ventures. "MONAX is a unique offering for our military customers who are looking for both creative and affordable solutions."

The MONAX communications system connects a commercial-off-the-shelf smartphone to a ground or airborne MONAX XG Base Station, enabling the use of a single, convenient, touch-screen device. The system is frequency flexible, connects hundreds of users to a single base station and delivers superior range and link performance in voice, video and data transmission.

The network uses a secure RF link, protected through exportable encryption for joint and coalition operations.

The Edison Awards are presented annually to innovative companies for products and services and to business leaders to symbolize the persistence and excellence personified by American inventor Thomas Alva Edison.
