SAN FERNANDO, Spain, March 23 (UPI) -- Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has launched the fourth P-44 multi-role maritime action ship for the Spanish navy.
Spanish Defense Minister Carmen Chacon, during a launching ceremony, said production of the ship, called Tornado, and earlier produced maritime action ships provides the Spanish navy with expanded capabilities.
The BAMs -- the Spanish acronym for the ships -- can be used in missions to monitor marine pollution, act as a hospital in disaster relief missions or combat piracy.
Chacon said the country's Council of Ministers started procedures for the preparation of a new program of BAM vessels. The second batch will include five new ships: three patrol boat versions similar to those of the first batch; one configured for search-and-rescue missions and a fifth ship configured for oceanographic research.
The vessels, together with F-100 frigates, one S-80 submarine, the Strategic Projection Ship Juan Carlos I and the tanker Cantabria, will "improve and renew the assets and capabilities of the navy to ensure that our armed forces are able to meet the challenges and threats that will appear," Chacon said.
