Sagem enhances artillery system

PARIS, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Swedish and Norwegian military forces are receiving artillery pointing and navigation units from Sagem of France.

Sagem, a member of the Safran group, said for 48 of its Sigma 30 systems came from BAE Systems, which supplies FH-77 L52 Archer artillery to the two countries.

Based on digital laser-digital gyro technology, Sagem's Sigma 30 is the basis of a very high-performance land navigation and artillery pointing system designed to operate even under the most demanding conditions.

Sagem said the Sigma 30 inertial units will be mounted on the 155mm barrel of the guns. Because of their precision measurements, the units enhance the high-level automation of the Archer artillery system.

Integrated in the artillery command and coordination systems, Sigma 30 will also give Archer operators a wide range of firing options, including simultaneous strikes against a single target.

BAE's Archer is a self-propelled, fully automated artillery system that can fire three-shot salvos in 13 seconds to a range of up to about 25 miles.
