Sweden orders Saab 3-D mapping simulators

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Sweden's Defense Material Administration has ordered 3-D mapping visualization models for Gripen fighter simulators.

Saab said the 3D-models ordered will be generated by its new Rapid 3D Mapping system, which is based on aerial images developed by the company.

"This is an important milestone that proves that 3D-models generated by our new product, Rapid 3D Mapping, can be used with excellent results for visualization in simulators", says Ulf Hellberg, head of business development within Saab's Dynamics business area.

Magnus Brege, marketing director for Rapid 3D Mapping, said 3-D mapping will provide "a more realistic solution compared to traditional ways of building visualization models."

The company said the technology behind Rapid 3D Mapping is a result of Saab's unique competence in image processing, navigation and systems integration resulting from the long experience in developing advanced systems for missiles.

Details of the contract weren't disclosed.

The Gripen, manufactured by Saab, is a lightweight single-engine multirole aircraft. It is in service with the Swedish air force, Czech air force, Hungarian air force and the South African air force. Thailand has also placed orders for plane.
