Taiwan develops anti-airfield weapon

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Taiwan's Wan Chien airbase suppression weapon system will soon be operational.

The Wan Chien air base suppression weapon system successfully passed the Taiwanese air force's Initial Operational Test and Evaluation earlier this year, Chien-tuan K'o-chi reported Monday.

While specific details are classified, the Wan Chien airbase suppression weapon system reportedly carries up to 100 secondary bomblet warheads and has a long-distance remote attack capability. Intended to be deployed against the People's Republic of China's southeastern coastal air base runways, the Wan Chien airbase suppression weapon system could also be deployed military massing areas, port and missile and radar positions as well.

Taiwan's Nationalist Party Legislator Lin Yu-fang stated that the Taiwanese military developed the Wan Chien airbase suppression weapon system in response to the United States declining to sell Taiwan its advanced AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon and the AGM-88 anti-radiation missile.

If the Wan Chien system is mass produced and commissioned into service, Taiwan's air force will be able to use the system to carry out long-distance suppression attacks against China's southeastern coastal inland military targets while operating from its Taiwan Strait airspace, minimizing the risk to its fighters.
