Finland asks rocket system upgrade

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Finland has requested a $100 million sale of U.S. military equipment to upgrade 24 of its multiple launch rocket systems.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, in notifying the U.S. Congress last week of the proposed sale, said the upgrade would "contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a friendly nation that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

"Finland will use this equipment to modernize its armed forces by expanding its existing architecture to counter threats from potential attacks."

It said implementation of the proposed sale will require about 10 U.S. government or contractor representatives to travel to Finland for a period of up to one year for equipment de-processing/fielding, system checkout and training.

Lockheed Martin would be prime contractor.

The program, if approved, would include upgrade Finland's M270 multiple launch rocket systems to universal fire control system configuration.
