NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- L-3 Communication's Nova Engineering subsidiary has been awarded a $52.8 million contract for Tactical Remote Sensor Systems.

The award from the U.S. Department of Defense is for five years and is to support the U.S. Marine Corps' Tactical Remote Sensor Systems program.

Under the contract, Nova will provide equipment, upgrades and repairs and program management services in support of the TRSS initiative.

"We are very pleased to be selected by the U.S. Marine Corps to continue the TRSS program," said Mark Fischer, president of L-3 Nova Engineering. "With thousands of units and components already deployed, our field-proven system captures, processes and transmits imagery that significantly improves situational awareness on the battlefield."

"This important award demonstrates the close partnerships we build with our customers, and our commitment to continually update and develop innovative products to meet the needs of an ever-changing market."

The TRSS system provides all-weather remote monitoring of activity within and near a given area. The system is unique in providing autonomous and continuous unattended sensor surveillance of multiple distant areas and can detect the presence of movement and classify the target, identifying it as personnel or wheeled or tracked vehicles, while determining the direction of movement, the company said.
