U.K. military services face huge cuts

LONDON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Britain may scrub large numbers of fighter planes, armored vehicles and warships as the government moves to cut defense spending, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The report said the country's new coalition government wants to cut defense spending by 10 percent to 20 percent over the next few years.

The Daily Telegraph, which said it had seen detailed proposals for Ministry of Defense cuts, said all three military services face the elimination of major capabilities.

The British air force could lose 120 Tornado strike aircraft and the fleet of multi-role Typhoon jets could also be reduced.

No mention was made of the British air force and navy GR9 Harrier strike aircraft, due to be replaced by Joint Strike Fighters.

The Telegraph said the proposed cuts for the British navy included two nuclear submarines and three amphibious ships.

The British army, meanwhile, could see 40 percent of its armored vehicles cut.

The proposals are part of the government's Strategic Defense and Security review, which will be finished in the fall.
