HONOLULU, July 30 (UPI) -- Natural Power Concepts and Oshkosh Defense have joined to develop a mobile turbine that generates both solar and wind energy.
Natural Power Concepts Inc., a Hawaii-based alternative energy technology incubator, said in a news release the Renewable Energy Mission Module will feature a folding-blade turbine that could be delivered to military forward operating bases and other remote locations by Oshkosh vehicles equipped with a Load Handling System.
In addition to electricity generation, REMM units can be outfitted with expanded capabilities such as water purification or desalination systems, powered by the REMM's wind turbine and integrated solar modules.
The wind turbine features seven instead of three blades "and, unlike conventional ones, it catches low speed winds more effectively," the company said. The electricity collected by the system will be stored in a battery bank and the batteries can be recharged by a generator if the energy gets low.
Natural Power Concepts noted the systems could be used in humanitarian aid and disaster relief situations as well as in military applications.
