ATLANTA, June 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's Phalanx gun system is set to get new radar switches from EMS Technologies, the company said.

Deliveries of the switches are scheduled to start in February 2011 and continue through 2013.

The switches are critical for the Phalanx system. It allows the radar to detect and track threats early in flight.

The Phalanx Close-in Weapons System is a rapid-fire, radar-guided gun system to defeat missile attacks and other close-in air threats. It is used on all U.S. warships and by more than 200 vessels of foreign navies.

It was first installed on U.S. Navy vessels in 1980.

"EMS is pleased t be a valued supplier to Raytheon in delivering switches for the U.S. Navy's Phalanx program," said Norm Johnson, vice president for EMS's Defense and Space division.
